  • What to consider when you buy a dog trailer

Still not sure what to get? Consider a couple of things:

    1. The size of your dog

The biggest thing to consider is to buy the right size for your dog, whether you have one or two or three pooches.

As a general rule of thumb, you probably don’t want to use a trailer for more than two dogs at a time. If nothing else, the biggest carrier you can get is 40 kg, and two 20 kg dogs is going to be hard to pedal up any hill.

Plus, you need the dogs to be comfortable in that space. Don’t go too big if you have a single Papillion who needs a soft place to rest her head between home and the forest. Small dogs like small spaces, it makes them feel safe – it’s why they love cave beds at home.

Measure your dog from the top of their head to their toes and tail. As a general rule, the size should be about the same size as you buy as a dog crate.

    2. The size of your car and storage

Where are you going to put this thing? Measure the whole thing and try and find the measurement of its size when it has collapsed. Are the wheels quick release and separate? Does it come with extras like handles and spare wheels?

At the end of the day, this has to live in your shed or your garage. More likely, you might travel by car to somewhere beautiful enough to cycle with worthwhile trails. In which case it needs to fit your car.

    3. Visibility and road safety

That road flag may seem funny, but it has a purpose. You want cars and other people on the roads to see you and the precious cargo you are carrying.

If you don’t have reflective gear, it may be worthwhile investing in some lights or simply get a colourful dog wagon for your bike. The more colourful it is, the easier it will be to see.

    4. Exits and entrance

This is the main reason why we generally don’t recommend you buy children bike trailers.

Dog bike trailers are custom made to be comfortable for your dog, you don’t need extra modifications, or to hack away at an expensive trailer to fit your dog.

The entrance and the exits are important, especially if your dog is a little older or finds it hard to jump in. A good dog cycle trailer will have a front and back entrance for extra flexibility and breathability.

    5. The materials

There’s a reason that almost all the carriers we’ve recommended are made out of a steel frame and all the wheels have steel spokes.

You may find cheap dog cycle trailers made out of plastic. Bear in mind that you will need to carry a dog safely through traffic and tough ground. You want a durable and safe material that will hold their weight and the shock.

You also want to be able to fix the wheels if you get a flat, or a spoke goes out of place. Steel can be bent back, plastic will break forever.
